She is well known for her works on gender issues, girls' education and tribal related activities and research. She has accomplished several projects related to people centric forest management and self-help groups. Indira authored ''Women in technical education: a sociological study'' in 1989 and has written many books. such as Hosadaari, Manushi, Mahile, samaja mattu samskruti, Bharatiya samaja and streevada diksuchi. In 1991, she was awarded a scholarship through the Fulbright Program.〔 She was also a lecturer at University of Mysore in the 1980s and, on August 28, 1997 at the university, she also spoke at a seminar about Swami Vivekananda. In 1998, she co-authored ''Gender and Society in India'' Volumes 1 and 2 (Manak Publishers, New Delhi) with Dr. Deepak Kumar Behera.
